About

Josh McCullar Architects pllc is a Richmond based Architecture and Design practice creating exceptionally crafted, site specific, and meaningful projects that enliven and bring purpose to the places we inhabit.

From urban and rural private family residences, pool & spa, spaces for art, church & sacred space, and modern landscapes, we create places that establish and cultivate memories and relationships for vision-driven clients throughout Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic region.

Ethos

As we are guided by a deep belief in the power of design to transform the simplest rituals of our lives, we aim to make places of evolutionary beauty - that celebrate the passage of time - and we believe that architecture at its best, strengthens the inherent qualities of the landscape to become a clarifying agent in affirming a sense of place.

It is through place-making, that we manifest the most fundamental task of architecture – to make shelter. Our buildings are extensions of the landscape, responsive to context, filled with natural light, and crafted of authentic and natural materials.

Buildings should be beautiful and well-crafted, because the most sustainable building is a permanent one. To achieve this, we foster a symbiotic union between architecture and construction - as such the conceptualization of design must be inseparable from how it is to be made. In each project, we seek a collaborative relationship with our clients, the contractor, and tradespeople who will execute the work.

We design private residences and additions, cultural, and community spaces - each striving to create places of Authenticity, Beauty, and Meaning. We listen first, engage, and are inspired by our client's deepest aspirations. While remaining committed to the art of design, we provide a high level of focus to solve pragmatic needs, and transform constraints into exceptional opportunities.

Firm Principal, Josh McCullar, has 23 years of experience, and founded this independent practice in 2016 to pursue a curated body of work focused primarily on bespoke houses, sacred space, places for art, and the design of architectural landscapes - much of which often involves the design of carefully planned “insertions” of modern design within historic contexts. The result heightens the experience of both.

Josh McCullar and his work are the subject of a biographical feature by nationally renowned writer J. Michael Welton, entitled “Architecture and the Poetry of Place,” published in the February 2025 edition of Virginia Living Magazine. Read more here…
