Towana

Built in 1925, this residence occupies a hillside site situated between the Three Chopt Road corridor and the Westhampton Campus of the University of Richmond. Serving the long term needs of a couple and their children, we have designed a series of modern interventions, including a complete transformation of the backyard landscape.

A detached garage on the west end is designed to match the architecture of the existing rough stucco clad home, while a modern three story addition at the south facing rear is positioned between the existing house and guesthouse engaging a new pool terrace, loggia, games lawn, specimen tree grove, and outdoor living room. A natural stone retaining wall stretching along the back of the house, provides an elevated bridge-like walk overlooking a “sunken garden” nestled between the two additions, and creates a hidden loggia at ground level.

Natural lime based stucco, white oak, cast-in-place architectural concrete, and stone are at once timeless yet complementary to the original context of the house and its century old neighborhood.

This project is a strong example of the holistic integration of architecture and landscape that JMA is known for.
